Is Albany a good place to live?

A tough set of grades. Albany grades D overall and ranks 669th of 745 in New York. Nationally, it does better than 13% of U.S. towns. The weak point is safety — it reports more crime per resident than 95% of U.S. towns, including 842 violent crimes reported to the FBI in 2025. Schools are weaker too (C−) — its public schools trail 85% of New York towns on state tests and graduation. Its strongest subject is walkability (A+). Homes run about $332K for a typical one, 3.8 times the Albany metro’s $88K median household income. Add health to its strengths — residents are healthier than 70% of U.S. towns on CDC estimates.
