Town of the day

Wexford: its architectural heritage runs to 629 buildings on the national inventory

Real strengths, and real weak spots. Crime is the sore point: for every 1,000 residents, gardaí record 8.7 violent crimes and 9.9 burglaries or acts of criminal damage a year. Wexford grades C overall and ranks #237 of 320 Irish towns. On that grade it does better than just over a quarter of Irish towns. Health is a weak point: 143 residents in bad health and 123 with a disability for every 100 its ages predict. Cost of living is where it shines — the median sale, €250,000, comes to 5.3 times what the median household here earns. The rest of its grades are middling: B− for jobs & income and B− for walkability.

How grades work

One letter, the same everywhere

Each subject compares a town with every Irish town of 1,000 or more, from public data: Garda recorded crime by station (CSO), the census and incomes (CSO), home sales (the Property Price Register), rents (RTB), radon (EPA), landslides (Geological Survey Ireland) and our flood measure from the OPW’s LiDAR. The overall grade blends six of them (cost of living, safety, health, jobs and income, walkability and hazard risk) for towns of 2,500 or more; places of 1,000 to 2,499 get subject grades, and smaller places have their page with the figures, without grades. Health is graded from bad health and disability in Census 2022 against what Ireland’s rates at each age would give. Schools aren’t graded in Ireland (Education Act 1998, s.53). Irish towns are graded against each other only, never against towns in our other editions. Every town page shows the figures behind its letters.

Questions about TownRatings Ireland

What is the best place to live in Ireland?

Among 320 ranked towns of 2,500 or more, Kilcock, Kildare ranks first, with its best grades in health and jobs & income. Every ranked town is on the list of the best places to live, and on its county’s where five or more are ranked.

Is my town graded?

Every town in Ireland has its page: all 1,039 places. What depends on size is the grading. The 321 towns of 2,500 or more get every grade the data allows, and 320 of them an overall grade; towns of 1,000 to 2,499 get subject grades, and smaller places have their page with the figures, without grades.

Where do the grades come from?

Public data under open licences: CSO recorded crime by Garda station, Census 2022 and the Geographical Profiles of Income, the Property Price Register, RTB rents, the EPA radon map, Geological Survey Ireland landslide susceptibility and the OPW’s LiDAR. Each town page names its sources.

Why aren’t schools graded in Ireland?

Section 53 of the Education Act 1998 rules out school league tables, so no school’s exam results are published school by school. Each town’s Schools page lists every primary and post-primary school nearby, but TownRatings gives no Schools grade in Ireland, and the overall grade is made from the other subjects.
