Hempstead does the important things well, at a cost. The city grades A overall and ranks 118th of 745 in New York. On that grade it does better than 86% of U.S. towns. Its strongest subject is walkability (A+). Add health to its strengths — CDC estimates put its residents' health ahead of 89% of the country.
