Cheap to live in, with trade-offs. Where it falls short is health (D): residents are less healthy than 92% of U.S. towns on CDC estimates. Cost of living is its strong suit (A−): a typical home costs about $141K, 2.4 years of the Salem area’s $58K median household income. Walkability is a strength too: it is more walkable than 65% of U.S. towns. Overall, that makes a B−, good for 639th of 987 in Ohio. Set against the rest, it does better than 47% of U.S. towns. The biggest place to walk is East Palestine City Park, 81 acres with 1.3 miles of trail. 16% of residents live below the poverty line in the town, above both Ohio’s towns (9.1%) and U.S. towns (9.6%).
