New York towns list more on the Register than most of the country (a typical New York town has 12.3 per 10,000 residents, the U.S. 2.4), so Tuxedo’s 6.6 sits near the middle of its state (39% of New York towns have fewer) while its 2 listings outnumber those of 60% of U.S. towns.

How sure. Graded on any two of the three inputs instead, the letter would range from C to B+. The pre-1940 share is a Census survey estimate (±6.6 points).

The story

How Tuxedo came to be

The historic occupants of what is now the town of Tuxedo were the Lenni-Lenape, a branch of the large Algonquian language family of Native Americans, whose different branches lived along the East Coast from Canada through the Upper South. The name Tuxedo is derived from the Lenape word ptukwsiit (Munsee dialect) or tùkwsit (Unami dialect), meaning "round foot" or Wolf Clan, e.g. the Unami name for this location is tùkwsitu, "place of the Wolf-Clan People". European-American colonists adopted that name for the town they developed.
