What drives Corinth’s History grade

On its age, its old homes and the National Register, Corinth is more historic than 83% of U.S. towns, #377 of 758 in New York. Its age holds the grade up; its National Register listings pull it down.

New York towns list more on the Register than most of the country (a typical New York town has 12.3 per 10,000 residents, the U.S. 2.4), so Corinth’s 1.5 sits below most of its state (23% of New York towns have fewer) while its 1 listings outnumber those of 51% of U.S. towns.

Palmer Falls is an area of whitewater waterfalls formerly known as "Kah-che-bon-cook", "Hadley Falls", "The Great Falls of the Hudson", or "Palmer's Great Falls". The falls are now named after Beriah Palmer, who at one time owned land along both sides of the river by the falls.

Around 1763, after the French and Indian War, Ebenezer Jessup and his brother Edward from Luzerne began lumbering operations in the area. They floated rafts of logs down the Hudson and bypassed Palmer Falls by landing the rafts at a place called "Jessup's Landing", now the public beach of the Village of Corinth, where they loaded the logs onto wagons and carted them around the falls.
