The story

How Freemansburg came to be

From Wikipedia’s history of Freemansburg.

The area that would become Freemansburg was first settled by the Bachman family in the 1760s with their old stone house, which also doubled as a tavern, still standing on the western edge of the borough. The Bachmans resisted several attacks from local Indians who lived on the opposite bank of the Lehigh River. Shortly afterwards the Bachmans were joined by the Freemans as well as Moravians from neighboring Bethlehem who built a series of mills, as well as a distillery and tavern.

The early inhabitants of Freemansburg attended divine services at the Lower Saucon church. Later a building was erected for the pur])ose of holding religious worship. A marble tablet in the front wall bore the inscription, "The Communion Church of Freemansburg, erected 1842." In this church the Lutheran, Reformed and Moravian ministers were permitted to preach. The Moravian ministers of Bethlehem, previous to the erection of this building, had been holding services in the village schoolhouse nearby.
