New York towns list more on the Register than most of the country (a typical New York town has 12.3 per 10,000 residents, the U.S. 2.4), so North East’s 447 sits above most of its state (91% of New York towns have fewer) while its 133 historic buildings outnumber those of 91% of U.S. towns.

The town of North East takes its name from its position in the county.

Part of the town was from the Great Nine Partners Patent of 1697, and part was from the Little Nine Partners Patent of 1706. The town was first settled by people from Connecticut, who located here from 1725–30, in a separate area called "The Oblong", which was not part of the Patent.

The Town of Northeast was formed in 1788. Parts of the town were taken to form the towns of Milan (1818) and Pine Plains (1823).

To go back from the graded school of to-day to the old district school a hundred years ago, and note the changes in the between time, would be very near an impossibility, and at best of tedious interest. Some old documents, however, relative to district schools in North East, having the essence of truth, are too good to be lost. These pertain to "North East," and it must be borne in mind that previous to 1818 North East embraced the territory of the now north part of North East, Pine Plains and Milan, and at that time " North East" and "Little Nine Partners'* were the same
