New York towns list more on the Register than most of the country (a typical New York town has 12.3 per 10,000 residents, the U.S. 2.4), so Nanticoke’s 0.0 sits below most of its state (10% of New York towns have fewer) while its 0 listings outnumber those of 23% of U.S. towns.

The story

How Nanticoke came to be

From Wikipedia’s history of Nanticoke.

The area was first settled by Europeans circa 1793. The town of Nanticoke was formed from the town of Lisle in 1831. The two villages, Glen Aubrey and Nanticoke, grew up around flour and lumber mills. Nanticoke people had been pushed from their home in the Chesapeake Bay first to Nanticoke, Pennsylvania, south of Nanticoke, New York. Later they were pushed again and resettled north once more, in Nanticoke, Ontario.
