What drives Jamestown’s History grade

On its age, its old homes and the National Register, Jamestown is more historic than 98% of U.S. towns, #54 of 758 in New York. All 3 inputs are above most U.S. towns; its share of homes from before 1940 ranks highest and its age lowest.

A+
HistoryA character grade: shown, never part of Jamestown’s overall grade.
All U.S. towns we grade (21,289)Ahead of 98%
NewerOlder
New York towns of 2,500+ (758)Ahead of 93%

New York towns list more on the Register than most of the country (a typical New York town has 12.3 per 10,000 residents, the U.S. 2.4), so Jamestown’s 217 sits above most of its state (83% of New York towns have fewer) while its 613 historic buildings outnumber those of 98% of U.S. towns.

How sure. Graded on any two of the three inputs instead, the letter would range from A to A+. The pre-1940 share is a Census survey estimate (±3.0 points). Two sources give 1810.

How Jamestown came to be

From Wikipedia’s history of Jamestown.

Jamestown is named after James Prendergast, an early Chautauqua County settler. His family purchased 3,500 acres (14 km2) in 1806 in the area now known as Chautauqua County. James Prendergast explored the area that is now Jamestown. and saw the area to be valuable, and so he purchased an additional 1,000 acres (4.0 km2) of land in the area in 1808. In the fall of 1809, Prendergast and an employee, John Blowers, built a log cabin, which became the first building in Jamestown. Another log cabin, as well as mills and a dam, were built on the Chadakoin River later on. In 1855, a night watch was created for the purpose of looking out for fires.
