Kentucky towns list more on the Register than most of the country (a typical Kentucky town has 29.9 per 10,000 residents, the U.S. 2.4), so Jackson’s 89.3 sits above most of its state (66% of Kentucky towns have fewer) while its 18 historic buildings outnumber those of 79% of U.S. towns.

How sure. Graded on any two of the three inputs instead, the letter would range from B+ to A−. The pre-1940 share is a Census survey estimate (±4.9 points). Two sources give 1839.

How Jackson came to be

From Wikipedia’s history of Jackson.

Read it all →

Upon the creation of Breathitt County in 1839, local landowner Simon Cockrell Sr. donated 10 acres (4.0 ha) to serve as its seat of government. The community was originally known as Breathitt, Breathitt Town, or Breathitt Court House after the county, but upon its incorporation as a city by the Kentucky Assembly in 1843, it was renamed Jackson to honor former U.S. president Andrew Jackson.

Local feuds led the national press to publish stories about Jackson and "Bloody Breathitt". In fact, state troops were dispatched twice in the 1870s and again in 1903 – after the assassination of U.S. Commissioner James B. Marcum on the courthouse steps – to restore order.
