Kansas towns list more on the Register than most of the country (a typical Kansas town has 5.1 per 10,000 residents, the U.S. 2.4), so Center Township’s 16.8 sits above most of its state (76% of Kansas towns have fewer) while its 3 listings outnumber those of 65% of U.S. towns.

Center Township was established in 1875 as one of the original nine townships of Smith County. The first settlers in what would become Center Township was Thomas Lane and Anthony Robertson and their families, settling there on July 22, 1871. The first birth in Smith County took place in what would become the township, happening on August 25, 1871. It lost parts of its land to create other townships: Washington Township, Cora Township, Blaine Township, Crystal Plains Township, Banner Township, Lane Township, and Pleasant Township. Modern Harvey Township was moved to land that was partially in Center Township as well.
