What drives Tarpon Springs’ History grade

On its age, its old homes and the National Register, Tarpon Springs is more historic than 59% of U.S. towns, #45 of 638 in Florida. Its National Register listings hold the grade up; its share of homes from before 1940 pulls it down.

Few Florida towns list much on the Register (a typical Florida town has 0.0 per 10,000 residents, the U.S. 2.4), so Tarpon Springs’ 168 sits above most of its state (96% of Florida towns have fewer) while its 433 historic buildings outnumber those of 97% of U.S. towns.

How sure. Graded on any two of the three inputs instead, the letter would range from C to B+. The pre-1940 share (±2.7 points) is firm at this size. Two sources give 1876.

The story

How Tarpon Springs came to be

From Wikipedia’s history of Tarpon Springs.

Read it all →

The region, with a series of bayous feeding into the Gulf of Mexico, was settled by farmers and fishermen around 1876. Some of the newly arrived visitors spotted tarpon jumping out of the waters, so they named the location Tarpon Springs. The name is said to have originated with a remark by an early settler who said, "See the tarpon spring!" (most fish splashing here were mullet). In 1882, Hamilton Disston, who in the previous year had purchased the land, ordered the creation of a town plan. On February 12, 1887, Tarpon Springs became the first incorporated city in what is now Pinellas County. Less than a year later on January 13, 1888, the Orange Belt Railway, the first railroad line to be built in what is now Pinellas County, arrived in the city. During this time the area was developed as a wintering spot for wealthy northerners.
