What drives Seal Beach’s History grade

On its age, its old homes and the National Register, Seal Beach is more historic than 22% of U.S. towns, #415 of 847 in California. Its National Register listings hold the grade up; its age pulls it down.

Few California towns list much on the Register (a typical California town has 0.0 per 10,000 residents, the U.S. 2.4), so Seal Beach’s 0.4 sits above most of its state (69% of California towns have fewer) while its 1 listings outnumber those of 51% of U.S. towns.

How sure. Graded on any two of the three inputs instead, the letter would range from D to C+. The pre-1940 share (±1.1 points) is firm at this size. The founding year is the first post office, not a stated founding date.

The Tongva village of Motuucheyngna was located in what is now Seal Beach in the area of the Los Cerritos Wetlands. It was part of the greater area of Puvungna, which was a major ceremonial and regional trading center for the Tongva and Acjachemen. Villagers used te'aats to travel out to villages on Pimu (Santa Catalina Island) and other islands off the coast, now referred to as the Channel Islands. In 2003, a burial site of the village was disturbed in a 196-acre (79 ha) Seal Beach residential development, Hellman Ranch, that was met with opposition from the Tongva.

He planted the first tree in Seal Beach, a blooming acacia, as well as other needed trees, and when the acacia was cut down, a gavel was made from some of the wood and presented to Mr. Ord by his friends; and this gavel he used in presiding over the deliberations of the board of town trustees. When Seal Beach was incorporated, on October 19, 1915, he was elected chairman or mayor, and was reelected to that office, retiring
