Jobs & commute in Ontario

More people are out of work in Ontario (6.3%) than in 77% of U.S. towns

9% of workers have no commute at all, where California as a whole has 17%. Ontario grades B for jobs and income and A− for walkability. For a town this walkable, transit is thin: about 1.8 trips an hour at the evening peak near the typical resident, next to 4.3 in Riverside.

Census ACS 2020–24, Census LEHD 2023, EPA Smart Location Database. How the two grades are made

What stands out · In brief

What the numbers say about work in Ontario

Ontario is where the jobs are

Ontario has 125,911 jobs, 1.7 for every working resident. Day and night ↓

No single place dominates Ontario’s commute

The biggest draw, Los Angeles, gets only 7% of working residents, and 52% work outside the top ten towns entirely. Ontario residents fan out across the region. The commute map ↓

Ontario draws workers from far and wide

The 125,911 jobs in Ontario are filled from a wide area. Ontario’s own residents hold 9% and the ten next-biggest home towns 31%; the other 60% come from many towns beyond those. The commute map ↓

Stores, warehouses and trucking

42% of the jobs in Ontario are in trade, transport and utilities, against 28% of the jobs its residents hold. The jobs ↓

Ontario has added jobs fast

Jobs based in Ontario went from 92,370 in 2013 to 125,911 in 2023, +36%. The jobs ↓

Written from the Census figures on this page. Commute flows, distances and jobs are Census LEHD 2023, primary jobs only (the self-employed aren’t counted); commute time and working from home are from the Census American Community Survey; a jump in jobs can partly be a big employer changing how it reports its locations.

Jobs & income grade

Ontario’s Jobs & income grade, measure by measure

On income, poverty, unemployment and job access, Ontario is better than 58% of U.S. towns, #427 of 847 in California. Job access by car holds Ontario’s grade up (ahead of 92% of U.S. towns); unemployment pulls it down. It also does well on household income.
