What drives Machias’ History grade

On its age, its old homes and the National Register, Machias is more historic than 35% of U.S. towns. Its share of homes from before 1940 holds the grade up; its National Register listings pull it down.

Few Washington towns list much on the Register (a typical Washington town has 0.1 per 10,000 residents, the U.S. 2.4), so Machias’ 0.0 sits below most of its state (27% of Washington towns have fewer) while its 0 listings outnumber those of 23% of U.S. towns.

How sure. Graded on any two of the three inputs instead, the letter would range from C− to C+. The pre-1940 share is a Census survey estimate (±17.3 points). Two sources give 1888.

Charles Niemeyer established a homestead along the Pilchuck River in 1877. The Seattle, Lake Shore and Eastern Railway was granted right-of-way across the property in 1888. Niemeyer later sold 80 acres (32 ha) to L. W. Getchell, who filed a plat in 1890 for Machias, named for his hometown of Machias, Maine. The townsite already had a post office and a general store; Machias later gained a church, two hotels, and several other businesses. A two-room schoolhouse was built in 1903. The town was surrounded by lumber and shingle mills; it was mostly destroyed in a 1914 fire.
