HistoryA character grade: shown, never part of Langley’s overall grade.
Few Washington towns list much on the Register (a typical Washington town has 0.1 per 10,000 residents, the U.S. 2.4), so Langley’s 9.6 sits above most of its state (85% of Washington towns have fewer) while its 1 listings outnumber those of 51% of U.S. towns.

Snohomish people have inhabited south Whidbey Island for thousands of years. Langley is known in the Lushootseed language as sc̓q̓abac, meaning "gooseberry bush."
The site of Langley was a camping spot used during clam harvesting in the summer months. Nearby, there was a village of the dəgʷasx̌abš, a Snohomish band, approximately one mile east of Langley on Sandy Point (Lushootseed: č̓əč̓ɬqs). This village had a large potlatch house, which brought visitors, even as distant as the Samish, during festivities.
