Syosset’s post office opened in 1846, and 1 of its places is on the National Register
Most of Syosset was built recently: 4% of its homes predate 1940 and the median home dates from 1958. Below: 2 old photos and papers, maps from 1947 on, and the census since 1990.
The location of what is now Syosset was originally inhabited by Matinecock Native Americans. In the 17th century, European colonists – primarily the Dutch and English – began to settle the area.
In 1962, Syosset Hospital – the hamlet's local hospital – was established. Located on Jericho Turnpike (NY 25), the hospital's opening provided the growing suburban community with improved, local medical care and facilities.
