What drives Kinston’s History grade

On its age, its old homes and the National Register, Kinston is more historic than 93% of U.S. towns, #6 of 290 in North Carolina. All 3 inputs are above most U.S. towns; its age ranks highest and its share of homes from before 1940 lowest.

North Carolina towns list more on the Register than most of the country (a typical North Carolina town has 12.5 per 10,000 residents, the U.S. 2.4), so Kinston’s 262 sits above most of its state (88% of North Carolina towns have fewer) while its 511 historic buildings outnumber those of 97% of U.S. towns.

NoteThe founding year comes from Wikidata alone; no second source gives 1762.

The story

How Kinston came to be

From Wikipedia’s history of Kinston.

Read it all →

At the time of English settlement, the area was inhabited by the Neusiok people. Preceding the historic tribe, indigenous peoples of a variety of cultures had lived in the area for thousands of years. Before the English colonists established the city, the area was called "Atkins Bank", referring to a bluff once owned by Robert Atkins just above the Neuse River; it was the site of farms, a tobacco warehouse, and a Church of England mission.
