What drives Kentwood’s History grade

C+
HistoryA character grade: shown, never part of Kentwood’s overall grade.
Louisiana towns list more on the Register than most of the country (a typical Louisiana town has 3.8 per 10,000 residents, the U.S. 2.4), so Kentwood’s 4.8 sits near the middle of its state (56% of Louisiana towns have fewer) while its 1 listings outnumber those of 51% of U.S. towns.
How sure. Graded on any two of the three inputs instead, the letter would range from C to B−. The pre-1940 share is a Census survey estimate (±5.1 points). The founding year is the first post office, not a stated founding date; Wikidata’s 1893 falls in the same era, so the grade doesn’t depend on which one is used.
Founding year: the first post office (other dates in Quick answers). Homes: Census ACS 2020–24. National Register: National Park Service, May 2026 list; each listing counted once (boundary changes and added documentation belong to their listing), and a historic district counts its contributing buildings. The Postmaster named the town in honor of Amos Kent on February 29, 1888. Kent was born in 1811 in New Hampshire and relocated to Louisiana in 1828. He landed in New Orleans, but moved to Baton Rouge, where he established a mercantile business. Kent relocated to Tangipahoa Parish after the Civil War, where he assisted in laying out the town in an area that had been cleared of pine trees. Kent died on January 31, 1906.
