What drives Van Meter’s History grade

On its age, its old homes and the National Register, Van Meter is more historic than 56% of U.S. towns. Its National Register listings hold the grade up; its age pulls it down.

Iowa towns list more on the Register than most of the country (a typical Iowa town has 9.1 per 10,000 residents, the U.S. 2.4), so Van Meter’s 18.4 sits above most of its state (68% of Iowa towns have fewer) while its 3 historic buildings outnumber those of 65% of U.S. towns.

How sure. Graded on any two of the three inputs instead, the letter would range from C+ to B+. The pre-1940 share is a Census survey estimate (±4.9 points). Two sources give 1869.

Van Meter was laid out as a town in 1869. The city was named for Jacob Rhodes Van Meter and his family, Dutch settlers from Meteren, the Netherlands. Van Meter was incorporated on December 29, 1877.

The Van Meter Visitor is a local legend that arose from 1903 newspaper reports of people claiming to have seen a winged, bat-like creature in and around Van Meter, reported to be able to shoot light from the horn situated on its forehead and be unaffected by bullets.

The legend includes modern-day claims of sightings, with the Van Meter Visitor Festival held annually around the anniversary of alleged events, attracting tourist business for the town.
