On its age, its old homes and the National Register, Audubon is more historic than 74% of U.S. towns. Its share of homes from before 1940 holds the grade up; its age pulls it down.
Iowa towns list more on the Register than most of the country (a typical Iowa town has 9.1 per 10,000 residents, the U.S. 2.4), so Audubon’s 37.6 sits above most of its state (73% of Iowa towns have fewer) while its 8 historic buildings outnumber those of 74% of U.S. towns.

There was not a railroad in Iowa when Audubon county was first settled. In 1865 the Rock Island railroad reached the town of Kellogg, and the Northwestern railroad reached the town of Boone the same year. In 1866 the Northwestern reached Council Bluffs, and one railroad got through to Des Moines the same year. At that period the people of Audubon county first began to realize that they were in touch \\ith railroad facilities.

In 1866, when the Hallock family was established in Audubon county, the very first settlers were arriving here, so that it is safe to say that the family has been connected with the history of Audubon county, and especially the agricultural life, practically ever since it was occupied by white people.

Audubon is more historic than 74% of U.S. towns. The History grade combines the town’s founding era, the share of homes built before 1940 and its National Register listings. It’s a character grade, so it isn’t part of the overall grade. How it works.
Two places: the Audobon County Court House (listed 2003) and the Audubon County Home Historic District (2015).
28% of Audubon’s homes were built before 1940 (Census estimate, ±8.1 points), against a typical 22% for an Iowa town; the median home was built in 1958.
