What drives Abbeville’s History grade

Georgia towns list more on the Register than most of the country (a typical Georgia town has 10.0 per 10,000 residents, the U.S. 2.4), so Abbeville’s 3.6 sits near the middle of its state (42% of Georgia towns have fewer) while its 1 listings outnumber those of 51% of U.S. towns.

How sure. Graded on any two of the three inputs instead, the letter would range from C to C+. The pre-1940 share is a Census survey estimate (±5.9 points). Two sources give 1857.

The story

How Abbeville came to be

From Wikipedia’s history of Abbeville.

Read it all →

Abbeville was founded in 1857 as seat of the newly formed Wilcox County. The town was incorporated in 1883. According to one tradition, the city was named after Abbie McNally, the wife of the original owner of the site, while another tradition states the name is a transfer from Abbeville, South Carolina.

During the Civil War, Confederate president Jefferson Davis camped at Abbeville on May 8, 1865 during his flight through Wilcox County at the end of the war, two nights before his capture by Union forces in Irwinville. The captured secretary was Francis R. Lubbock, a former governor of Texas, along with Confederate postmaster John H. Reagan, the last treasurer.
