Few California towns list much on the Register (a typical California town has 0.0 per 10,000 residents, the U.S. 2.4), so West Athens’ 0.0 sits below most of its state (31% of California towns have fewer) while its 0 listings outnumber those of 23% of U.S. towns.

How sure. Graded on two of the three inputs, so a change in either one moves the letter more than it would with three. The pre-1940 share (±1.5 points) is firm at this size.

The story

How West Athens came to be

From Wikipedia’s history of West Athens.

Read it all →

Athens was platted and settled in the first decade of the 20th century. The area was initially marketed as Athens-on-the-Hill, apparently referring to two 200 ft (61 m) hills ("the eastmost summit is around 122nd and 124th, Broadway and Athens Way, and the westernmost summit is between 117th and 120th, S. Budlong and Vermont").
