Real strengths, and real weak spots. The weak point is hazard risk: FEMA rates its natural-hazard risk higher than 100% of U.S. communities, with inland flooding at the top. Boulder Creek’s overall grade of C+ puts it better than 44% of U.S. towns, 251st of 841 in California. It lags on cost of living as well (D): the typical home is worth about $737K, 6.6 years of the Santa Cruz metro’s $111K median household income. On health it is strong — residents are healthier than 86% of U.S. towns on CDC estimates. Walkability is a strength too (A): it is easier to get around on foot or by transit than 88% of U.S. towns. The town’s trail density is 3.4 miles per square mile, above both California’s towns (1.0) and U.S. towns (0.4). Only 52 of California’s 1,063 towns score higher on history.
