Arroyo Grande lies in the traditional territory of the Northern Chumash, also known in historical sources as Obispeño Chumash. Chumash communities used coastal and inland resources and participated in regional trade. Shell beads and stone for making tools were among the items traded, and basketry was part of their material culture.
Spanish mission colonization, beginning in 1769, disrupted Chumash communities through disease, displacement and livestock grazing that depleted food resources. Survivors worked at the missions and on surrounding lands.
