South Dakota towns list more on the Register than most of the country (a typical South Dakota town has 37.3 per 10,000 residents, the U.S. 2.4), so Lemmon’s 66.2 sits above most of its state (83% of South Dakota towns have fewer) while its 8 historic buildings outnumber those of 74% of U.S. towns.

Lemmon's history as a town started in 1902 with the U.S. government's forced leasing of about 800,000 acres of Standing Rock Sioux Reservation lands to cattle rancher George Ed Lemmon.

In 1919, Lemmon became a sundown town, prohibiting African Americans from living there.
