Civic life grade

What’s behind Canton’s civic life grade

On library visits, community nonprofits and volunteering, Canton is among the top 1% of U.S. towns, #1 of 31 in South Dakota. All three inputs put Canton near the top nationally; the share of younger adults in volunteering groups ranks highest.

Civic life counts registered nonprofits, library visits and online volunteering groups, so it can miss civic life that runs through congregations, mutual aid or neighbors looking out for each other.

How sure. Graded on any two of the three inputs instead, the letter would still be A+. Canton is small (3,001 residents), so a few dozen organizations or visits move its per-resident figures; the volunteering share is a 2022 estimate from Facebook users aged 25–44.
