Choosing a School in Independence

We're a family new to Independence and we're trying to decide on a school for our kids, I was wondering if any locals could offer some advice on the school district, particularly since we've heard great things about the high schools like Truman High and William Chrisman High, what are your experiences with the schools in the area?
