Why does Larchmont grade so well?

Because it does well by almost any measure. Larchmont earns an A, ranked 70th of 745 in New York. It is among the healthiest towns in the country on CDC estimates, its public schools beat 89% of New York towns on state tests and graduation, and the median household earns $168K. The exception is cost of living: the typical home is worth about $1.8 million, 17.8 years of the New York metro’s $99K median household income. History is its standout character grade: an A, better than 94% of U.S. towns. 84% of adults 25 and older hold a bachelor’s degree or more in Larchmont, against 32% in New York’s towns and 29% across U.S. towns. Few places in the country are easier to get around without a car. Only 4 of the 758 New York towns we compare have a lower share of residents below the poverty line than Larchmont.
