What drives Galena’s History grade

A+
HistoryA character grade: shown, never part of Galena’s overall grade.
Few Illinois towns list much on the Register (a typical Illinois town has 0.5 per 10,000 residents, the U.S. 2.4), so Galena’s 3,425 sits above most of its state (100% of Illinois towns have fewer) while its 1,004 historic buildings outnumber those of 99% of U.S. towns.
How sure. Graded on any two of the three inputs instead, the letter would still be A+. The pre-1940 share is a Census survey estimate (±11.0 points). The founding year is the first post office, not a stated founding date.

The city is named for galena, the natural form of lead sulfide (PbS) and the most important lead ore. Native Americans mined the ore for use in burial rituals. The Havana Hopewell first traded galena in the area during the Middle Woodland period (c. 1–400 CE). However, the use of galena in the Havana territory is uncertain; very little has been identified in burial mounds. During the Mississippian period (900–1500 CE), galena saw use as body paint.

November 8, 1836, the first fire company of Galena was organized with a roll of sixty-six members, many of whom have since been prominent in Galena's history. This company was called the "Galena Fire Association No. 1." At the next meeting recorded, the Association is termed the " Cataract Engine Co. No. 1." Meetings were held on the first Saturday of each month, the Secretary being Geo. W. Mitchell. At a meeting held at the Engine house on Bench Street, on February 4, 1837, a committee was appointed to act with a similar committee from " Neptune Fire Co. No. 2,"
