What drives Sneads’ History grade

On its age, its old homes and the National Register, Sneads is more historic than 34% of U.S. towns. Its National Register listings hold the grade up; its share of homes from before 1940 pulls it down.

Few Florida towns list much on the Register (a typical Florida town has 0.0 per 10,000 residents, the U.S. 2.4), so Sneads’ 5.6 sits above most of its state (82% of Florida towns have fewer) while its 1 listings outnumber those of 51% of U.S. towns.

How sure. Graded on any two of the three inputs instead, the letter would range from C− to B−. The pre-1940 share (±2.1 points) is firm at this size. The founding year is the first post office, not a stated founding date; Wikidata’s 1894 falls in the same era, so the grade doesn’t depend on which one is used.

Founding year: the first post office (other dates in Quick answers). Homes: Census ACS 2020–24. National Register: National Park Service, May 2026 list; each listing counted once (boundary changes and added documentation belong to their listing), and a historic district counts its contributing buildings. How Sneads came to be

From Wikipedia’s history of Sneads.

Read it all →

The community was initially settled as Pope's Store from May 15, 1829 to 1837, during the Spanish Florida era to when it eventually became the Florida Territory under American rule. Between 1837 to around the 1870s, it was called Gloucester. It was renamed as Snead's Store from the 1870s to 1883, when its name was changed yet again to Snead's Station, before ultimately being shortened to the Town of Sneads when it was officially incorporated as a municipality on October 26, 1894. It's the fourth largest municipality in Jackson County, following Marianna (the county seat), Graceville and Malone.
