How grades work

One letter, the same everywhere

Each subject compares a town with every U.S. town of 1,000+ residents, from public data (FBI crime reports, Census surveys, state school tests, CDC health estimates, EPA and FEMA data). The overall grade blends seven of them for towns of 2,500+; schools are compared within each state. Every town page shows the figures behind its letters.
